Member Spotlight: Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art WSU

Since opening in 1974 in the WSU Fine Arts Building, the Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art WSU has grown into a leading cultural institution in the Inland Northwest, connecting Washington State University students, faculty, and the broader Pullman community with art from around the world.

Through its Collection Study Center, a research, teaching, and training space that provides students with hands-on access to the permanent collection, the museum stewards more than 4,000 works of art. Highlights include a significant collection of Pop Art, with works by Andy Warhol, as well as the Holland Collection, a group of Post-Impressionist paintings acquired during the tenure of WSU President Ernest O. Holland.

The museum also benefits from its unique relationship with its namesake, businessman, philanthropist, and art collector Jordan D. Schnitzer, who lends works from his personal collection of more than 22,000 artworks. Through exhibitions drawn from this collection, the museum brings world-class art to the Palouse and expands access to artists and works that might otherwise be out of reach for the region.

Education is central to the museum’s mission. Museum staff collaborate with classes across disciplines at Washington State University, connecting course themes with exhibitions and creating hands-on learning opportunities that bring coursework to life. Within the WSU Department of Art, MFA students present annual thesis exhibitions at the museum, giving emerging artists a professional platform to share their work and gain valuable exhibition experience.

With access to internationally renowned art alongside opportunities for emerging and local artists, the Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art WSU brings the world to Pullman while celebrating the creativity, scholarship, and artistic community of the Palouse.
